About Us

The history of Allen Metropolitan African Methodist Episcopal Zion Church is rooted faith, joy, and love. Formed in 1897, it was and continues to be a haven for God’s people. The first recorded owners of this parcel of land were T.J. and Lucy Hight. The property was then sold to Joseph Allen, Noah H. Johnson, Richard Bass, Gilbert King, William Copeland, H. A. Freeman and W.T. Smith of Franklin County, all of whom were trustees of the church.

During or around 1923, under the leadership of the pastor, Reverend J.Z.Silas, the church was rebuilt. The construction of Allen Metropolitan was rooted in faith, joy and love and the community volunteered their time and resources to ensure its completion. A few years later, under the visionary leader of Reverend J.A.Bridges and Presiding Elder J. A. Brown, the mortgage was burned.

The church doors were closed briefly during the depression. However, as a result of the outreach efforts of Trustee W.O. Allen and Bishop Kyle, the church was reopened for services, with worshipers coming from the community as well as local educational institutions such as Albion Academy and the Girls Training School.

In 1991 the church was renovated under the leadership of Reverend R. Harris, Bishop and Mrs. John H. Miller, Presiding Prelate of the Eastern North Carolina Episcopal District.

Throughout its history, Allen Metropolitan has been blessed with talented Christians and great servants who have rendered outstanding services to the church.
